The interior of the biggest brick church in Europe dating back to the Middle Ages presents several works including maritime motifs. One should mention here a baroque wooden pulpit with scenes which depict Christ teaching from a boat and the construction of Noah's arc. In St. Mary's Basilica there is Admiral Arend Dickmann's tomb. He was the commander-in-chief during the Battle of Oliwa which took place in the roadstead of the Gdańsk Harbour on 28th November 1627. In the victorious battle over a squadron of Swedish warships the admiral was fatally wounded. His funeral took place on 2nd December 1627 in St. Mary's Church. In 2007 a tombstone commemorating the admiral's death was placed in the basilica. In St. Mary's Basilica there is also the Sailors' Chapel, founded by Andrzej Bohomolec - the captain of the yacht DAL on which he had crossed the Atlantic Ocean between the years 1933-1934.
