Founded in 1488 the formerly spelled "Schiffer-Kompanie" is a foundation set up for the local shipper men's protection and cooperation. It was also responsible for the financial security of the seamen's bereaved and is the oldest of its kind in Germany. This was and is a brotherhood of seamen to help one another and their families in social necessity. On earlier times this was nearly the same like an insurance. Today the premises of the Schifferkompagnie are akin to a museum, even though they are not declared as one. In two big saloons interested people can find a worth seeing collection of captains pictures, model ships and mementos of oversea voyages.
