Tjärö is one of the most beautiful islands in Blekinge. The island is a nature reserve and has got a very popular hostel. You can reach Tjärö by boat from Järnavik or Karlshamn.
Grassing and farming during more than thousand years form the nature. In the 16th century there was only one farm on the island. 200 hundred years later there were four farmers. Agriculture, cattle breeding and fishing fed at least 20 persons. In 19th century there was also some stone hewing on the island.
In 1940 the island was bought from the last farmer by Svenska Turistföreningen and turned into a hostel. Guests are accommodated in the atmospheric hostel, which is filled with 18th and 19th century features.
The hostel has around 100 beds in a number of buildings as well as cottages that may be rented.
