The port of Sölvesborg is strategically placed on the Swedish east coast, only hours away from the ports on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea. The port activity as such in Sölvesborg can be deduced back to the 1600's when the era of the Hanseatic power was over. In the year 1670 the right of collecting fees from port activities had been lost and the shipping industry faced a miserable time causing that the 16th century was a lost century for the shipping industry. It took until the middle of the 17th century for the industry to get going again with export on own keels from the region.
In 1839, the first employee, a harbour master, was employed to take care of all matters in the port. In the year 1851, 185 ships entered the port.
In 1801 the first shipyard was established in Sölvesborg. The peak for the yard was in the time after the second world war. In the beginning of 1980's the whole industry in Sweden went into bankruptcy and the shipyard closed.
