In the 17th century Hjortahammar was spoken of as one of the busiest farmer's harbours in Blekinge. From this harbour were, among other things, firewood, cows and horses shipped, mostly to Germany and Denmark. Hjortahammar is situated near what earlier was a very important sailing fairway and most probably it was an important harbour as early as in the Viking Age. A wooden barrier beneath the water already in that time protected the entrance to the harbour.
On the narrow tongue of land is Blekinge largest prehistorically grave field with more than 120 visible graves situated. The graves are among other forms round, square, triangular or formed as a ship. The oldest graves date from the time when Christ was born but most of them are from 700-1050 AD.
