Västervik museum, beautifully situated on the so called Kulbacken, has the character of a town museum with the maritime heritage playing a dominating role. Here you can see a great number of ship portraits and ship models, mostly from the sailing ship era, as well as a large model of a shipyard. Displayed are also nautical instruments, seamen's memorabilia and tools from both the shipyard and onboard the ships. Outside, under a roof, a number of open wooden boats are displayed, which were used for fishing and transport in the Tjust archipelago outside of Västervik. Outside the museum building is also an open-air museum with several buildings including boatswains' cottages, in which the boatswains, that is the Navy's drafted personnel, lived when they were not on duty.
