Tropical seas within the walls of a monastery

The Meeresmusem in the Old Town of Stralsund is situated in the former Dominican Monastery of St. Catherine. The exhibitions provide information about marine science, marine biology and fishing, as well as the fauna and flora of the Baltic Sea. Particularly impressive items on display are the 15 metre long skeleton of a fin whale, a polar bear, Japanese spider crab and leatherback turtle. The 36 tropical aquariums hold a plethora of marine life, including nurse sharks, cute sea-horses and brightly coloured coral reef fish, as well as sea turtles in Germany's largest turtle aquarium, with a 3m x 8m viewing pane.
